Vista Del Sol Environmental Science Academy students and their families ran, walked and enjoyed a fun-filled day at the school’s first Turkey Trot on Nov. 18. The event was an opportunity for the Wranglers to come together and promote wellness and school spirit in the community.
Physical Education teacher Justine Farmer organized the Turkey Trot during the school’s P.E. classes. Participants trotted through the wrap-around course inside the gym and around the building for 20 minutes, getting their daily exercise. Additionally, families at each grade level had the exciting opportunity to win a frozen turkey to take home for Thanksgiving.
Farmer said the event was an excellent way for parents to set a good example for their children about staying physically active, even during the chilly winter months.
"I think it's important just because the kids get to see their parents exercising, and they see that it's fun," Farmer said. "It's a lifetime skill that they can have not just with their family now, but with their families in the future. So, it's just good to get everybody out and active, especially in the cold season."
Second-grader Regina Cervantes was thrilled to have her mom, dad and baby brother participate alongside her.
“I like running with them!” Regina Cervantes said. “I felt excited when I saw them.”
Her dad, Manuel Cervantes, said the Turkey Trot provided a great opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children, especially since he and his wife work seven days a week. They planned to return later to join their oldest daughter, a fourth grader, for more fun.
“It’s very worth it for the kids,” Manuel Cervantes said. “To see her smile when we walked in this morning, that's what we're here for.”
The event featured several sponsors, including EP Dentistry for Kids, Craze and Elev8 Gym, which raffled a free three-month membership.
Tanya Salcedo, whose daughter is in the school’s Pre-K program, took advantage of the free hands-only CPR training offered by El Paso Community College during the event.
“I think it’s very important to learn how to do CPR. I took a lesson a few years ago, so I wanted to try it again,” said Salcedo. “I’m also here to have fun with the kids.”
