Employees participating in Healthy Body, Strong Mind

The Socorro Independent School District has launched the Healthy Body Strong Mind wellness initiative to encourage overall fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness for SISD faculty and staff.

The new wellness program has inspired employees across the district to unite and participate in weekly workouts and healthy activities, including yoga, meditation, resistance workouts and more, at SISD schools.

Healthy Body Strong Mind includes weekly in-person activities, which are being led by facilitators at each campus and the District Service Center, and an online fitness component for employees to exercise on their own schedule.

Campus facilitators gathered before the new school year at the district’s Technology Services Center to learn about the program to promote physical fitness and focus on mental health for SISD faculty and staff.

At the training, the employees learned about their roles as facilitators, participated in a group icebreaker and completed workout samples in teams.

SISD sports coordinator Alexia Tucker said she was excited to be leading the initiative that will help district educators be better for their students.

“Our employees need to take care of themselves before they can be the best in their classrooms or amongst their colleagues,” Tucker said. “We are excited for our facilitators to take what they’ve learned here in today’s training and take it back to implement at their campus.”

The program will incorporate TeacherFit, an online platform that will help guide workouts, meditation, and other activities and features. SISD teachers and staff have access to the platform to participate in fitness activities at their leisure.

Healthy Body Strong Mind will be available throughout the school year and campus facilitators are conducting two in-person workouts per week.

Physical education teacher at Hueco Elementary Isaac Solis said he is looking forward to sharing what he learned at the training to help his peers back on campus get in the right mindset for the school year.

“We know that exercise can help relieve stress and this is a great outlet for teachers to have,” Solis said.

Lisa Rublacalva, community program supervisor for the district’s volunteer sports program, said she loved learning about the initiative and that it was a great start to an exciting new school year.

“We were having fun, while working out,” Rublacalva said. “I really hope everyone takes advantage of this initiative.”

The initiative also will incorporate health and fitness events at campuses or district facilities. The community wellness events will be conducted to encourage everyone in the school communities, including employees, students and parents, to stay fit and be healthy.

The events are scheduled to begin in September and will be open to the entire community.
