James Vasquez was named acting superintendent of the Socorro Independent School District in April 2024. He joined SISD in October 2023 to serve as deputy superintendent overseeing district operations.
Mr. Vasquez has nearly 30 years of experience as an educator, beginning his career as a teacher in 1995 at Hueco Elementary in Socorro ISD. He went on to become an instructional coach, assistant principal, and principal in SISD. Mr. Vasquez has been part of the Socorro ISD team for 21 of his 29 years in education. During his career, he also worked as a principal in El Paso ISD and a director and assistant superintendent in Ysleta ISD.
He earned a master’s degree in educational administration in 2002 and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in 1995 from the University of Texas at El Paso. He graduated in 1987 from Riverside High School.
Mr. Vasquez says Socorro ISD has been an excellent learning and work environment for his family and he is grateful for the many opportunities the district has provided for them. His wife, Laura, recently retired and taught in SISD for more than 20 years. His son, Luke, is a product and graduate of Socorro ISD.
